Well iv lasted a month in Saudi Arabia and am still having a great time!! The time since my last email hasn't been as eventful as the first week secondary to settling logistical things like bank accounts and my paramedic license etc. This all because of the nature of the people doing this tasks. First i really want to stress that what i am about to say has nothing to do with "middle east VS western" ideas, More importantly it has nothing to do with Muslim VS. non-Muslim ideals. It has to do with inherent Laziness and a lost idea of "work ethic" this (to those i have talked to on skype or email already know) made me extremely frustrated, but has become more entertaining as time goes buy. I find myself laughing out loud A LOT!! When i ask my peers, whether there Saudi or not, why something did or didn't happen i find the most common response to be "Remember what country your in!" HAHAHAHAHA
The two main things that have happened in the last couple of weeks were rather interesting, to say the least.
First- I was invited to dinner at a Princes house. Now before you think that this a major event you must understand there are over 2,000 princes in line for the throne, all of which are considered royalty and have different levels of involvement in the government. However they are all incredible wealthy by Saudi standards so U.S. equivalence is " HOLY SMOKES THIS GUY WIPES HIS BUTT WITH $1,000 BILLS" Either way i had a great time. I meet him via a climbing contact as he is very into Mountaineering and rock climbing, so the invite was to watch a movie about climbing in Yosemite. (of which i became an in prompt to narrator.) I was unaware of his royal Connections, as he is a young American educated very down to earth individual, until dinner when we were served a very traditional Saudi meal consisting of things i'm not sure have a translation into English, in a very western format by his 17 house servants. (also understand its only he and his wife that live in a 25,000 square foot home of which i was only allowed to see about 5000 square or so, and he has 17 servants) The topic of his Royalty only came up as a very small portion of planning a climbing trip into a part of the region that belongs to the king and being aloud access. The food was Amazing While eating it the, thought of it being camel meat or something even more random crossed my mind as i ate, but the food was too good to care. and the princes sense of humor is what stopped him from telling me exactly what the food was made from, and allowing my mind to ponder the possibilities.
Second- Christmas in Saudi Arabia WOW! What an experience! simply put there is no Christmas! the closest thing to Christmas lights are the road hazard signs which in the U.S. are all one colored light bulb in Saudi there multicolored. so the running joke is that they decorated the road construction just for us. Christmas dinner was actually a feat due an award. I meet a really fantastic Australian couple that have been in country for about three years and have cooking down to an art. Before you all say "well im a good cook" Cook and entire four course Christmas meal including a whole Turkey, Stuffing, potatoes, yams, Chocolate moose and green bean casserole in a standard microwave. As leery as i was the meal was extraordinary!!!!! But the best part was the Moon shine. Being the self respecting Aussies that they are not only did they have the , rot gut gin made in a five gallon Alhambra bottle, But they also had an artful display of home made beer, red and white wine, and best off all Irish cream, all made from the confines of there bathroom! HAHAHAH non the less we all got plowed and walked down the streets of his western compound singing Christmas carols to the applause of all the other westerners we saw. We finished out the night teaching a couple of Bangladeshis Beer pong. well not all to traditional a celebration its definitely one ill never forget.
I hope all is going well back home, and that everyone had a great Holiday.
